Overview of the Accelerated Reader Program

The Accelerated Reader program is a reading incentive program to encourage and reward "reading for pleasure", and to promote a life-long love of reading. As students complete a book, they take a computerized quiz about the book. By passing quizzes with a passing score, students earn points. A test can only be taken one time on an individual book. Students receive a score and points based on the difficulty and the length of the book read.

At NCES, each student's classroom teacher assigns them a reading level range(which is adjustable throughout the year) . This reading range is determined by the student taking an Accelerated Reader STAR test. As they earn points by reading AR books, they visit the AR store to choose prizes. They receive other recognition in the form of certificates, stickers, and reward parties.

Neshoba Central Elementary Library own 9,133 Accelerated Reader quizzes and the book titles which correspond, in a wide range of reading levels and point values.

Guidelines for Taking AR Quizzes

Failure to follow the guidelines could result in deletion of tests from the student's reading record.

  1. Teachers or helpers are only allowed to read the questions for students who need assistance.
  2. The book being tested should remain closed.
  3. The students should choose the answers to questions all by themselves as this checks their comprehension.
