Accelerated Reading

Accelerated Reading is a computerized reading program intended to increase a child's reading level while at the same time building a love for reading. This page is intended to give parents a quick overview of the program in order to better help their children at home.

In the fall, the students are given a computerized reading test to determine their reading level. After the reading level is determined, the student is allowed to check out books from the school library and take them home to read.

It is suggested that the child read the book two or three times to an adult before taking an AR test. To help prepare for the test, the student could be asked questions regarding the story's details. After this is done, and the student feels he or she is ready, they will take an AR test on the computer at school.

If the test score is 80% - 100%, they can read just two more books at the same level before moving up to the next reading point level. A score of 60% is still considered "passing" but will not count towards advancing the reading level. Any score below 60% indicates that the book was either too hard for the student or that he or she did not comprehend it well enough. If a child makes two scores below a 60%, he or she will be moved down to the next lower level.

When students pass an AR test, he or she will receive points based on the reading level of their book. These points are accumulated and allow the students to move up in AR point groups. Also, as each student reaches a new point group, he or she is rewarded with a small toy from a bin designated for that group.

Students should remember to bring their AR books to school each day as we encourage them to read them during the day as well.

AR is not counted towards the student's reading grade in any way, but that does not diminish the importance of the program.

Tips for Success: Read with your child every night on his/her AR book. Discuss the story with your child. Ask your child questions about the story. The more they read and pass tests, the higher they will get in the Point Clubs.

Point Clubs are leveled as follows:
1 Points
3 Points
5 Points
10 Points
15 Points
20 Points
25 Points
30 Points
40 Points
50 Points...
They increase thereafter in increments of 10.
The Point Club levels will go as far as needed. They do not have a ceiling.

The READING LEVEL of the book your child is on is NOT related to the POINT Club level they are in. Usually, the higher the point club, the higher the reading level because of the volume of books read plus the strength of reading skills from the volume read.

Remember: The more they read the better reader they become!
