Dolch Sight Word Lists

From 50 to 75 percent of all words used in printed material are Dolch Basic Sight Vocabulary words. The Dolch words are the 220 most frequently found words in books that children read which cannot be learned through the use of pictures. Many of these words cannot be sounded out because they do not follow decoding rules. Because they are used to hold thoughts together, these words must be recognized at a glance before a child can read with confidence. These lists are studied in first through third grade giving the children a good base for beginning reading. These words must be learned as sight words.
